Looking For Free Motorcycle Training In Virginia? The DMV Has You Covered

Who doesn't like free motorcycle training?

MSF Rider Safety Training

It's the beginning of May, and you know what that means: Motorcycles (and motorcyclists) are waking up from our long winter's nap. Even in states with warmer weather, you'll see more and more bikes on the road, whether you ride or not.

And that means more people who don't yet know how to ride wanting to learn, which is awesome. Even better, if you're a Virginia resident, the state Department of Motor Vehicles will be offering some FREE motorcycle safety courses in honor of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. It's hard not to like the sound of the word "free," especially in today's economy, right?

Now, there are some important things you'll need to be aware of before you sign up. The course is a Circuit RiderCourse one-day, hands-on training that will be taught by certified instructors. Unlike some motorcycle courses, though, you'll be learning this one on your own bike.

The dates for the free one-day course are September 20 and 21 in Richmond, Virginia. The course will last from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with a break for lunch in the middle of the day.

If those dates or that location doesn't work out for you, the Virginia Rider Training Program (VRTP) has a number of other one-day courses available throughout the spring and summer months. Courses will be offered in Martinsville, Roanoke, Hampton, and Richmond.

The list of required riding gear is pretty simple and expected: 3/4 or full-face DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet, eye protection (face shield on the helmet or goggles), motorcycle gloves, motorcycle jacket, sturdy pants (motorcycle pants preferred, but jeans allowed), over-the-ankle sturdy boots (high-top sneakers not accepted).

One-day courses on the calendar for 2025 run from May through September, and Virginia residents can access the signup sheet to join in the fun type of education here.
